O filme, de mais de 3 horas de duração que conta a história da primeira e última viagem do “maior objeto móvel já construído pelo homem”, o RMS Titanic, naufragado nas águas geladas do Atlântico Norte em 14 de abril de 1912, permite uma série de reflexões sobre a realidade empresarial (afinal, o Titanic era um empreendimento), sobretudo considerando as perigosas águas do atual ambiente competitivo.
A principal dessas reflexões talvez seja a relacionada com a Lei de Murphy: em empreendimentos de risco, adotar a postura “paranóica” de que é preciso estar atento a todos os detalhes e a todas as possibilidades de erro é a atitude mais prudente (não esquecer de Andy Grove, presidente da Intel, no C&T 119, “só os paranóicos sobrevivem“). Outras lições podem ser as seguintes:
1.NINGUÉM É “INSUBMERGÍVEL” (não importa o seu tamanho, sempre pode aparecer um iceberg inesperado no caminho).
2.O PIOR SEMPRE PODE ACONTECER (mesmo nas aparentes melhores condições atmosférica possíveis).
3.É MELHOR COMEÇAR A FALAR DAS DIFICULDADES, ASSIM QUE APARECEM OS PRIMEIROS INDÍCIOS (com a notícia de que havia gelo no caminho era imprudente manter a velocidade máxima durante a noite para fazer a viagem transatlântica mais rápida do mundo).
4.OS PROCEDIMENTOS DE SEGURANÇA NÃO DEVEM SER NEGLIGENCIADOS, MESMO QUE A CATÁSTROFE PAREÇA REMOTA (foi absolutamente insensato colocar menos barcos de salvamento que o necessário para não atrapalhar a circulação dos passageiros pelo deck).
5.O QUE DEU CERTO NO PASSADO NÃO GARANTE SUCESSO DIANTE DE SITUAÇÕES NOVAS (o comandante, apesar de experiente, nunca tinha feito o percurso num navio tão grande e de resposta mais lenta aos comandos bruscos de mudança de rumo).
Uma sucessão inesperada de erros e negligências provocou uma catástrofe de mais de 1.500 mortos. Do ponto de vista empresarial, o fundamental é precaver-se obstinadamente para que erros inevitáveis não se juntem numa cadeia fatal.
